Two-router /30 point-to-point lab. R1 is an authoritative UTC NTP master (stratum 3). Configure R2 as an NTP client to R1 and display local time in MST/MDT while remaining synchronized to UTC. Reinforces that NTP distributes UTC and the router applies timezone/daylight-saving only to presentation.
Learning objectives
- Configure a Cisco IOS router to synchronize its clock using NTP to a reachable authoritative master
- Apply a local timezone offset for display without altering the underlying UTC timebase
- Enable recurring daylight-saving time (summer-time) so the displayed time automatically adjusts
- Verify NTP status and local-time presentation with show commands
Troubleshooting focus
- Confirm L2/L3 reachability on the /30 point-to-point link before blaming NTP
- Understand that NTP distributes UTC; verify timezone/summer-time for local display
- Allow time for NTP to select and mark a source; grade by configuration presence, not by convergence
- Check for typos in timezone sign (west of UTC is negative) and daylight-saving rule syntax
